The IRT closed out 2025 at the SoCal Open at Meridian Qube in Fullerton, CA. Thanks to the tournament sponsors, the club, and all of the players for supporting tournament racquetball.

Congrats to the IRT winners for the weekend:

  • Singles: Conrrado Moscoso
  • Doubles: Moscoso & Kadim Carrasco

TL/DR Executive Summary: Moscoso gets a big win over Kane Waselenhchuk, then finishes off the event for his 11th career singles title, then gets the upset win over top seeds Montoya/Mar for the double win in Fullerton.

Singles Recap

In the 32s, there were no real upsets. We had a couple of closer games from Diego Gatica and Alejandro Bear, but otherwise the seeds held.

In the 16s, there were a couple of notable results:

-#9 Lalo Portillo topped #8 Alan Natera in two closer games; this is not necessarily an upset, but we haven’t seen Portillo’s as much on tour this year due to his limited schedule.

-Javier Mar (#7) beat Jordy Alonso (#10) 15-6, 15-5 in a match many thought would be closer.  Mar is solidifying his spot in the top 10 this year with continued quarter final results.

-The biggest match of the round was Thomas Carter getting a win over #5 Rodrigo Montoya in an 11-9 tiebreaker.  This is a  huge win for Carter, the best of his career.

In the Quarterfinals:

– #1 Kane Waselenchuk was pressed by Portillo in game one, but won 15-10, 15-1

– #4 Moscoso easily beat Carter 15-5, 15-2 to setup a dream semi.

– #6 Andree Parrilla beat #3 Jake Bredenbeck 15-7, 15-4 to move into the semis. This was a pretty solid win for Andree, something he followed up on in the next round, and is part of a pattern for him of having spurts of success on tour.

– The best match of the round was Javier Mar and Andres Acuna, which was back and forth and featured some really fun rallies especially at the end, as Acuna pulled it out 11-9 in the tiebreaker to reach the semifinals.

In the Semifinals:

The match of the event was Waselenchuk vs. Moscoso, and the Bolivian put on a show. He ran off 12-straight points unanswered in game one, with 4 service winners and six 3-point rally kill shots wherein he missed just one first serve. Waselenchuk had no answers, either getting handcuffed on the serves or having to send them to the ceiling defensively. Waselenchuk did a better job in game two and looked to be pushing towards a tiebreaker, but Moscoso held firm, and got a come from behind 15-14 win to advance. It is awfully hard to beat someone who’s hitting 160mph bullet first serves on concrete without ever missing, and that’s what we saw all weekend from Moscoso.

In the other semi, Parrilla improved to 5-2 lifetime against Acuna on tour to move into the final.

In the Finals, Moscoso picked up where he left off, giving Parilla a rare finals donut in game one before taking the title with ease.

Points Implications of results

With the win, Moscoso moves into #3 on tour, just a few points back from #2 Acuna.  Other top players will move down a spot, while Montoya’s early loss lowers him to #6. There was no other real movement of import amongst the top 16, even given all the missing junior players here.

From Todd Boss: HERE is a link to my IRT Rolling 2year Calendar XLS, which I use to approximate the points after each event. It is not exact but it’s usually close enough to the actual rankings, which Ryan Rodgers does with R2 Sports on behalf of the tour after each event, to allow some quick post-event analysis before the rankings post.

Doubles Recap

It’s been a little while since we had a real IRT Pro doubles draw; not since March in Lombard has the tour done one, mostly because all the events in the interim have been combined events where the prize money was split with the LPRT or used for Mixed Pro Doubles.

It was fun seeing tour veterans Rocky Carson III and Alvaro Beltran team up, losing a close match to Portillo/Parrilla, 15-11, 15-10 in the quarterfinals. The Bredenbeck brothers lost to Montoya/Mar in a tiebreaker in the semifinals.  But Moscoso, clearly feeling at the top of his over the weekend, carried partner Kadim Carrasco over the top seeds Montoya/Mar to claim the title.

Next Up on the IRT

The tour takes a break until the new year, then visits an long-running tournament for an IRT-350 satellite at the Carl Myers Winter Blast in Garden City, Kansas before heading to Sioux Falls for the 46th annual Lewis Drug Pro/Am, one of the leading events on the schedule.  For the full IRT schedule, see https://irttour.com/tournaments/ .
